It’s not hard to link cycling and Minchinhampton when you live in Bath, the latter being a great destination for a mid-week ride. Nestled in the Cotswolds, it’s a beautiful ride to get there. The coffee stop, The Kitchen café, is one of our best. Good cake. Great coffee (even the decaf I drink).
It’s harder make the link between Minchinhampton and J.K. Rowling. However, it turns out that they are filming parts of Casual Vacancy in the village, which we found out when we ran into film security blocking the road. After an amiable chat with the crew, we were allowed to wheel our way past cameras and director before the next shot. It’s a shame they didn’t ask us to stop to add some backdrop interest.
Filming in and around Bath is quite common. This was not the first time I have come across a film set. Castle Combe has been used by many films, most recently for Warhorse, The Wolfman, and Stardust. It was for the Warhorse film that I had to improvise a detour as the village was completely blocked off and they did not have carbon bikes in the early part of the 20th century.
